Why GearLend verifies identity

GearLend facilitates rentals of valuable professional equipment between people who've often never met. Identity verification is one of the main ways the platform builds trust between renters and gear owners, alongside secure payments and refundable security deposits.

When verification is required

You can create an account and browse listings without verifying your identity. To complete a booking, though, you'll need to pass identity verification first. This applies to every renter, on every booking, regardless of the rental value.

What it protects

Verification confirms that the person booking a rental is who they say they are, which:

  • Gives gear owners confidence about who's renting their equipment
  • Reduces the risk of fraudulent bookings
  • Creates accountability if something goes wrong during a rental

What you'll need

Verification is handled by Veriff, a third-party identity verification provider. You'll need a valid government-issued photo ID (such as a driver's licence or passport) and a device with a camera to complete a quick liveness check. See How Veriff verification works for the step-by-step process.
