Understanding GearLend fees

Every booking on GearLend involves two separate fees: a community fee, paid by the renter, and a service fee, paid by the gear owner. Both are shown up front, before anyone commits to a booking, so there are no surprises at checkout or payout.

The community fee

The community fee ranges from 5% to 10% of the rental price, added at checkout alongside the refundable security deposit. Booking further in advance moves it toward the lower end of that range. The exact percentage for your booking is always shown before you confirm. See Understanding the community fee for the full detail on how it's calculated and when it applies.

The service fee

The service fee is a flat 10%, deducted from a gear owner's payout after a booking is confirmed. You don't pay it separately. It's shown when you create a listing and again on each booking confirmation. See Understanding the service fee for the full detail.

Why GearLend charges fees

Fees fund the trust and safety infrastructure that makes peer-to-peer rentals of high-value equipment possible: identity verification, secure payment processing, customer support, and ongoing platform development. Without them, GearLend couldn't offer the protections that make renting from a stranger feel safe on both sides.

Cancelling a booking is free at first

You can cancel within 2 hours of sending a booking request for a full refund of the rental price and the community fee, no matter how soon your pickup is. After that window, refund amounts depend on how close to pickup you cancel. See Understanding cancellation fees for the full schedule.

Where to see the exact amount

The exact community fee is always shown before a renter confirms a booking, and the exact service fee is always shown before an owner publishes a listing and again on each booking confirmation.
